Philadelphia website offers condoms to kids as young as 11
By Staff Writer
In order to reduce the negative effects of the high number of Philadelphia youth who are engaging in unprotected sex, a new website offers mail-order condoms to kids as young as 11 years old, according to a recent article published by CBS News. Gary Bell, who works for a nonprofit group aimed at preventing the spread of HIV and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among young people explained to the news source that he believes the new initiative is warranted. "We hear from teachers and school counselors and sometimes the principals that kids are cutting school in the afternoon and leaving early to go have orgies, and that's in middle school," he told the news provider. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a total of 46 percent of American high school students have had sex, and 14 percent have had sexual encounters with four or more partners. Recent cuts to public schools' funding have resulted in many districts eliminating their sexual health programs. Therefore, students may be unaware of the pregnancy and STD risks associated with their behaviors. Parents who are unable to monitor their kids who participate in unsafe sexual activities may consider enrolling them in boarding schools for troubled youth.
