Police to use grant to prevent alcohol sales to minors

By Staff Writer

Laws are in place to prevent kids from drinking alcohol, but many underage individuals across the country are still finding ways to obtain liquor. Petamula, California, is one example of a town that is taking proactive measures to control the growing problem.

Recently, the Petamula Police Department's traffic unit received a local grant to hone in on individuals who may be guilty of providing alcohol to minors. The grant is slated to run through June 30, according to Petaluma 360. The authorities plan to use the money to initiate operations using decoys to trap alcohol vendors in the act of selling liquor to minors.

To apprehend retailers who are breaking the law, officials will send underage individuals into stores to purchase alcohol. Sellers who provide the liquor will be charged with the crime in an effort to reduce the rate at which local teens are obtaining the substance.

The 2009 Youth Risk Behavior Survey revealed that 42 percent of high school students had consumed alcohol within a 30-day span, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Drug rehab programs can help individuals dependent on alcohol, but law enforcement may be able to prevent people from abusing the substance at a young age.
