Poor sleeping habits may lead to depression later in life

By Staff Writer

Drug rehab programs may be able to help children who have turned to illicit substance use as a result of depression. However, new research shows that poor sleeping habits may be to blame for the bouts of depression that plague individuals during their teenage years.

A recent study published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research found that kids who had trouble sleeping between the ages of 12 and 14 were twice as likely to have suicidal thoughts by age 15, according to KVUE-TV.

Experts say that by learning more about sleep disorders in children, they may be able prevent mental illnesses in the future. Psychiatrists and psychologists are currently working to develop new ways to teach kids how to manage anxiety that may occur shortly before bed time. Giving children the tools they need to cope with racing thoughts could help them get into healthy sleeping patterns over time.

Approximately 20 million Americans age 18 or older suffer from mood disorders every year, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Rehabilitation facilities and therapy may be able to help individuals manage their illness and live normal lives.
