Principal calls mandatory meeting to address drug use

By Staff Writer

Many children turn to drugs to cope with the stress of family life and school, and illicit substance abuse is becoming a growing concern in many small communities across the country. Swampscott, Massachusetts is the latest town to attempt to take proactive measures to prevent drug abuse among kids.

Recently, Swampscott High School principal Layne Millington called a mandatory meeting for parents and administrators to address the increase in the number of students abusing drugs, according to the New England Cable Network. Millington told the news source that shortly before the beginning of the school year, he saw five cases of substance abuse among students. With support from the school board and superintendent, Millington intends to aggressively address the issue with parents.

Not all parents are in agreement with Millington's decision, including Judy Bevis. The mother of a freshman who attends the school believes that they should not be forced to listen to Millington's reasoning. As adults, Bevis told the news source that parents are capable of tackling the problem on their own.

More than 29 percent of public high school students say they can easily obtain illicit substances, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Substance abuse programs for youth may be able to lower the number of teens who turn to drugs.
