Raid fails to stop high school students from using drugs

By Staff Writer

As more troubled teens rely on illicit substances to cope with the stress of everyday life, law enforcement officials and school administrators are stepping up their efforts to catch kids in the act of drug dealing.

Recently, police officers who had been tracking drug trafficking students undercover for months raided Palm Desert High School in Palm Desert, California, an effort to crack down on the problem, according to The Desert Sun. Although many students and teachers say they learned a valuable lesson, a number of teens told the news source that the drug trafficking has moved further underground to evade law enforcement.

A Palm Desert High School sophomore who wished to remain anonymous told the Sun that prior to the drug bust, many kids were open about their substance abuse. Now, troubled teens have become more secretive about their drug use, but they are not doing it less as a result of the raid.

Drug addiction costs the U.S. more than $484 billion every year, according to the Department of Justice. Troubled teens who begin experimenting with drugs at an early age may be susceptible to developing an addiction. Drug rehab programs can help kids who are suffering from a dependency to an illicit substance.
