Raynham Middle School focuses on anti-drug education

By Staff Writer

For many adolescents, substance abuse begins at a young age. In an effort to reduce local drug use among children, parents and school administrators in Raynham, Massachusetts, have shifted their focus to education.

At the Raynham Middle School, students now attend health classes during one-third of the year, according to the Taunton Daily Gazette. This curriculum comes after a student was caught while attempting to sell counterfeit narcotics. However, parents and administrators are working to educate children on the dangers of drugs, as opposed to punishing them for one incident.

The health classes that students attend not only address substance abuse, but bullying and good nutrition as well. The goal is to cover a wide spectrum of issues to lead students down a healthy lifestyle path.

"We try to be proactive here," Raynham Middle School principal David Thomson told the news source. "We are talking about making good decisions with our kids and helping them make positive health decisions."

Approximately 10 percent of eighth grade students admitted to using illicit substances in 2010, according to researchers at the University of Michigan. Rehabilitation facilities and school counselors can provide kids with substance abuse help.
