Relaxing video games can have positive effects on teens

By Staff Writer

Past research indicates that children who play violent video games may be more aggressive than youths who do not. However, the results from a new study by researchers from Ohio State University indicate that teens who play more relaxed games tend to be happier and more kind.

In order to get these results, researchers asked 150 college students to play either a relaxing, neutral or violent game for 20 minutes. Then, these participants played games against another simulated player. The teens could give their opponents a blast of noise of a sound level and length of their choosing. Those who played violent games chose to give others a louder, longer blast, while individuals who played relaxing games gave the quietest and shortest blasts of sound.

Researchers said that an example of this type of video game is Endless Ocean, where players are scuba divers who look for hidden treasure in the sea. Even when these divers are approached by marine life such as sharks, they are not harmed.

Parents who feel they cannot get their teens to stop playing violent video games may want to consider enrolling them in schools for troubled youths.
