Schools for troubled youths may help students who abuse prescription drugs
By Staff Writer
Many American medicine cabinets are filled with a variety of prescriptions that some parents believe are completely harmless. However, teens in Washington state and other areas across the country have been consistently abusing these medications, the Snoqualmie Valley Record reports. Washington has one of the highest teen prescription abuse rates in the U.S., according to the Community Network's Healthy Youth Survey. About 12 percent of high school sophomores said they used these drugs recreationally in the 30 days before the study, while 16 percent of seniors said they abused the medications. Kristy Trione, executive director of the Snoqualmie Valley Community Network, told the news provider that teenagers have what they call Skittle parties, where everyone brings whatever drugs they find in their medicine cabinet. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the two drugs most commonly used by teens are Vicodin and OxyContin. If parents believe that their children are abusing prescription drugs, they may want to research a troubled youth boarding school, where staff members are trained to deal with teens who have this problem.
