Sierra Vista addresses teen dating violence issue

By Staff Writer

Members of Arizona's Sierra Vista Unified School District Governing Board recognized the prevalence of teen dating violence by creating a program that will address the issue, according to The Herald. Dating abuse will soon be added to the curriculum in grades seven through 12 as part of the schools' heath and wellness offerings.

According to a professional from the Sierra Vista Domestic Crisis Center Community Outreach program, it is very important for teens to learn about dating violence. She told the news outlet that about half of sixth graders have already started dating and about 42 percent of these children say they have experienced partner violence.

Since teen dating abuse can be common, adults should look out for signs that can include isolation, failing grades, mood changes and the use of drugs or alcohol, according to the Alabama Coalition Against Dating Violence.

Parents who are concerned that their child is being abused by a partner may want to consider the option of enrolling him or her in a therapeutic boarding school. These facilities can allow teens to get away from their regular environments while being supported by a trained faculty.
