Some teens get alcohol from their parents

By Staff Writer

In an attempt to curb the appeal of alcohol for their children, some parents may supply their teens with moderate amounts. However, a recent article published by CBS News suggests that these parenting strategies are ineffective, since many underage kids drink to excess.

According to the news source, 86 percent of 21-year-old Americans drank alcohol before they were of legal age.

In light of prom season and spring break, CBS raised the question of whether or not parents should serve or allow their teens to consume alcohol under adult supervision. While some parents said they believe that alcohol drinking at home will promote responsible consumption later in life, the news organization noted that more than 200,000 teens are hospitalized each year due to binging.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) defines binge drinking as the consumption of five or more consecutive beverages. More than 23 percent of high school seniors partake in this level of alcohol use, according to the NIH.

Teens who begin using controlled substances early are at risk of developing dependency. Parents of children who frequently abuse alcohol may consider enrolling them in boarding schools for troubled youth.
