South Carolina students sign pledge to stay sober during prom season

By Staff Writer

Members of a student-run coalition are asking high schoolers from three different York County, South Carolina, high schools to sign a pledge to stay sober on their prom nights, according to a recent article published in the Rock Hill Herald.

One of the students, 15-year-old Hannah Gresham, also wants parents to agree to an alcohol- and drug-free lifestyle from April 29 through May 1.

"If the parents are impaired, they're not going to see what their kids are doing. There's no parenting in that," she told the newspaper.

Gresham told the news source that she joined the Out of Their Hands campaign because she witnessed many of her classmates talking about their experiences with drinking and marijuana use.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 72 percent of high school seniors have tried alcohol. The organization notes that teens who drink liquor are more likely to experience problems with their academic work and personal relationships, along with several other negative effects such as legal problems or unwanted pregnancy.

Kids who suffer from alcoholism at a young age may benefit from attending boarding schools for troubled youth.
