Study highlights importance of childhood education

By Staff Writer

In order to see how important early childhood education is, researchers from the University of Minnesota and the Human Capital Research Collaborative recently conducted a study using data from the Chicago Longitudinal Study. This information allowed them to track the lives of more than 1,400 individuals over a 25-year period.

The study's results indicate that individuals who participated in early childhood programs beginning at age 3 had a higher level of well-being in adulthood. For example, these people had more advanced educational success, stronger job skills, lower rates of incarceration and a diminished risk of substance abuse problems.

Specifically, of those participants who went to early childhood programs, 9 percent more graduated from high school, 28 percent fewer abused alcohol and drugs, 22 percent had less felony arrests and 35 percent less had been arrested for violence than those who did not attend these classes.

Parents who want to give their children additional academic support may want to consider enrolling them in therapeutic schools. These facilities can give students a structured curriculum while assisting them with behavioral or mental problems.
