Study shows drug use can lead to serious car accidents
By Staff Writer
Although many teens know that drinking alcohol before driving can lead to danger on the road, they may not be aware that using drugs, such as marijuana and amphetamines, can cause similar results. A new report published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs indicates that of all American drivers who were killed in car accidents, about one-quarter tested positive for drugs. The most commonly abused substances by these individuals were marijuana and stimulants such as cocaine and amphetamines, according to researchers. Additionally, the researchers cited a government study that indicates that about 14 percent of U.S. drivers who were randomly pulled over tested positive for drug use. This leads researchers to believe that drugs may not be responsible for all fatal crashes, as individuals who use these substances may be more reckless drivers in general. Teens who are worried that their drug habits could lead to danger on the road may want to consider enrolling in schools for troubled youths. Staff at these facilities may be qualified to help adolescents manage their substance addictions.
