Support may benefit homosexual teens

By Staff Writer

Approximately 29 percent of high school students say that illicit drugs are easy to obtain directly on campus, according to Teen Help, a statistics site. Substance abuse programs for youth provide healthy alternatives to kids, but a supportive family can help deter children from drug use as well.

Gay, bisexual and trans-gender adolescents often face adversity from their peers, according to Time Magazine. However, new research shows that support from loved ones may be able to keep teenagers away from drugs. Experts say that acceptance from family members may also reduce the risk of a child developing depression.

Caitlin Ryan, the director of the Family Acceptance project, told the news source that teens who received emotional support were less likely to commit suicide. Recently, bullying and depression has been cited as the reason for a number of teen suicide cases. Understanding the connection between behavior and mental health may help reduce the number of homosexual teenagers who suffer from depression.

Rehabilitation facilities can help adolescents who have become dependent on drugs. However, moral support from family members may be able to prevent these issues from occurring.
