Survey reveals increase in marijuana use among Florida teens

By Staff Writer

Substance abuse among children has been on the rise, but marijuana appears to be the drug of choice in Florida. A new survey released by the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) found that kids who live in the Sunshine State favor marijuana over other illicit substances, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Statistics gathered by NIDA found that many instances of drug abuse in rehabilitation facilities can be linked directly to marijuana. It remains the primary drug responsible for patients admitted to detoxification programs across the state. Specifically, teenagers who reside in South Florida commonly enter drug rehab programs for marijuana abuse.

Experts told the news source that the laid back attitude of adolescents in regards to the drug may be responsible for its recent popularity. Parents of these teenagers are also typically unaware of the potency of the Tetrahydrocannabinol found in marijuana today, as opposed to decades ago.

Short-term memory can be impaired, along with immune response when abusing marijuana over an extended period of time, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Drug rehab programs can help individuals detoxify and turn their lives around.
