Teen girls can lose confidence online

By Staff Writer

During their fragile, tumultuous and often volatile teen years, girls can find their self-esteem shattered at even the slightest offenses. Adding to this problem is Facebook, a website that easily allows teens to reach a mass audience with rumors, compare themselves with others and see a numerical value for how many friends they have.

Recently, father and internet safety professional Sam Black got a first-hand look at the problems that Facebook and similar websites can cause, WPRI reports. His daughter came to him and said that one of her close friends was being harassed online by another group of girls who called her ugly. Black said he was shocked to know that it was happening to someone his daughter knew, even though he was aware of similar online threats due to his profession.

Many teen girls most likely deal with similar problems, as about 500 million people worldwide are active Facebook users, Digital Buzz reports.

Parents who believe that their daughters suffer from self-esteem issues may want to consider enrolling them in therapeutic schools, where staff members can increase their confidence and their ability to deal with other teens.
