Teen idol discusses her struggle with depression and bullying

By Staff Writer

When actress and singer-songwriter Demi Lovato checked into a rehab program months ago, many reports suggested that the teen idol was struggling with drug addiction. However, in an article published by ABC News, the 18-year-old explained that she suffered from depression due to frequent bullying, along with food addiction and self-harm behaviors.

According to the news provider, Lovato spent three months undergoing treatment for her mental problems, after she abruptly ended her tour with the Jonas Brothers.

The star told the news source that she has become involved with anti-bullying initiatives, since she suffered frequent verbal abuse from peers throughout middle school. Lovato eventually requested to receive home schooling.

"Bullying prevention is my main platform. You know, anything I can do to make people aware so it can stop, I'm all for it," she told ABC.

According to the American Medical Association, more than 3.2 million sixth to tenth grade kids endure bullying and more than 3.7 of these young adults engage in peer abuse.

Boarding schools may offer an alternative for children who are considering home schooling due to bulling.
