Teen violence is an under-reported issue

By Staff Writer

When an 18-year-old was allegedly killed by her teenage boyfriend in Massachusetts, the national issue of teen violence was once again discussed by news outlets across the nation.

Despite national coverage, a youth team coordinator for Close to Home, a Boston advocacy group, recently told ABC News that teen dating violence is ofter unreported or under-reported. Additionally, officials from the Community Advocacy Program in Boston told the news outlet that only about one-third of teenage dating violence is reported.

The coordinator said that there are many different types of teen abuse and when many youths enter relationships they are inexperienced. These factors can cause adolescents to be unaware of what is considered abuse and what is not.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, dating violence can be either physical, emotional or sexual. These unhealthy relationships typically start with small signs, such as teasing and name calling, but can end with violent and aggressive behaviors.

Parents who are concerned that their child is involved in abusive relationships may want to consider enrolling him or her in a therapeutic boarding school.
