Teens may use hookah as "starter drugs"

By Staff Writer

Nearly half of college students in North Carolina have used hookahs to smoke flavored tobacco products, which may cause a domino effect that proceeds from cigarette use to illegal substance abuse, according to a recent study published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence.

The survey of young adults from eight different colleges found that more than 40 percent of respondents had smoked from a hookah and 17 reported that they were habitual hookah users.

Researchers attribute these findings to the increasing number of hookah bars across the country. These establishments offer social smoking settings and a wide variety of flavored tobacco and herb products, according to the investigators.

The poll results indicated that freshmen students and males were the most likely to use these devices and there was an association between hookah users and people who answered that they had smoked cigarettes or marijuana, done illegal drugs or drank alcohol within the prior 30 days.

The scientists said they believe that hookah use is becoming a "gateway" for other drugs.

Boarding schools may provide a healthy environment for kids who are at high risk for engaging in drug use.
