Teens' sleep habits can influence their GPAs

By Staff Writer

A recent study by faculty from various American universities shows that students who are struggling in school may simply need to get more sleep. This information was presented at the 25th Anniversary Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies.

The study's results indicate that poor sleep hygiene was connected to a lower grade point average (GPA) in high school students. Most of these students developed worse sleep patterns when they entered college and therefore saw their GPAs decrease even further.

Researchers said that sleep hygiene includes all voluntary behaviors and habits that can affect healthy sleeping patters. This may include creating a relaxing bedtime routine and avoiding caffeine before bed.
Results from the study further indicated that there is a difference between individuals who prefer to stay up late at night and those who would rather wake up early. Night owls, or students who like to stay up at night, often have lower GPAs than early risers.
Parents who are concerned with their children's academic performance may want to consider enrolling them in therapeutic schools.
