Teen's suicide raises concerns, awareness of depression

By Staff Writer

Addiction in families can cause emotional stress on children and evoke depression. However, even the most unlikely adolescents are prone to developing the condition, despite receiving love and care from their family members.

Taylor King is one example of a teen who exhibited few signs of depression before taking her own life, according to Florida Today. The 14-year-old's parents had seen a dip in her grades and a break-up, but all of King's friends believed she was rebounding. Recently, King's mother found her daughter dead in her bedroom after a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No suicide note was left behind for the authorities.

"The hardest part is we have no idea why," Taylor's mother Renae Matteson told the news source. "I just don't want it to happen to any other child or family."

Matteson recently started the Taylor 4 Teens group to raise awareness of suicide at local schools. Her hope is to remove the stigma behind depression and encourage families to seek help for the condition.

Females are almost 16 percent more likely to develop depression than males, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Addressing the condition may be able to help prevent suicide and give individuals a second chance at life.
