Teens who feel unsafe may bring weapons to school
By Staff Writer
A 17-year-old student was recently charged with one count of possession of marijuana and two counts of bringing a weapon onto school grounds, WBTV reports. After police heard the teen had weapons and drugs in his North Carolina high school, they searched his vehicle and reportedly found marijuana, a foot-long bowie knife and a pellet gun. Researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital state that many young adults carry weapons because they believe they bring a level of security, especially at school. Approximately 30 percent of teenagers said they are afraid in their academic institutions. A report by the Center for Disease Control's Youth Risk Behavior System shows that in 2009, about 17.5 percent of students said they carried a weapon, such as a gun, knife or club, in the past month. Almost 6 percent said they carried a gun to school in the 30 days prior to taking the survey. Parents who are concerned that their teens are carrying weapons may be interested in enrolling them in schools for troubled youths. These facilities may be able to keep students out of trouble and improve their grades.
