By Staff Writer

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, about two in every 10,000 children has an autism spectrum disorder such as Asperger's syndrome.

A private practice clinical psychologist recently spoke with Time about the challenges that many people who have Asperger's, face on a daily basis. Many of these individuals show symptoms such as obsessions for one topic, poor social skills and sensitivity to bright lights and loud noises.

The professional told the news outlet that the majority of the clients that she works with are teenagers. These youths often struggle during this point in their lives because they are beginning to transition between being a teenager and an adult. The stress of this transition can can give them a depressive or anxiety disorder, she said.

Many teens who struggle during the transitional years begin to self-medicate with substances like alcohol and marijuana, according to the news provider.

Parents who have teens with Asperger's may want to enroll them in a therapeutic boarding school. During what can be a very difficult period in their lives, the faculty at these programs can give them additional support and assistance.
