Teens who watch too much TV may be at a higher risk for health problems

 Many teens enjoy coming home from school and watching television for the rest of the night. However, a new study from the Harvard School of Public Health shows that this may not be the best thing for their health. Researchers found that excess television watching can lead to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and early death. The senior author of the study said that individuals should not simply focus on increasing physical activity; people should also strive to reduce the amount of time they spend doing sedentary activities, such as watching television. Still, he said that the average American spends about five hours in front of the TV every day. Specifically, the study indicates that watching over two hours of television daily can cause an increased risk for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Individuals who watch over three hours of TV every day face an increased risk of premature death. Schools for troubled youths may be able to assist teens who have television or video game addictions find better ways to live a healthy lifestyle
