Teens work to reduce underage drinking
By Staff Writer
The Super Bowl is one of the biggest events of the year when Americans like to kick back and enjoy an alcoholic beverage. However, many kids manage to get their hands on liquor as well, which can result in negative health effects. In an effort to reduce the rate of underage drinking, teenagers in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, are attempting to raise awareness of the problem to vendors. Recently, 15 teens blitzed liquor stores across the area, applying warning labels to alcohol, according to the Press of Atlantic City. These stickers remind consumers that supplying alcohol to minors is illegal and can result in fines and jail time. The teenagers are a part of a local nonprofit group that works year-round to reduce the rate of underage drinking among their peers. Laurie Smith, who helps with the initiative, told the news source that volunteers focus on big events, including the Super Bowl, New Year's Eve and Labor Day. The 2009 Youth Risk Behavior Survey revealed that 42 percent of high school students had consumed alcohol within a 30-day span, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Drug rehab centers can help kids who have an issue with alcohol abuse.
