Texas parents offered forum to learn more about drugs
By Staff Writer
As drug use becomes a growing concern in regions of the country, more school administrators are pushing parents to take initiative by talking to their kids about illicit substances. The Midland Independent School District is one example of an area in Texas that is working to educate adults on the prevalence of drugs in the community. Josie Alvarez, a member of the district, is organizing a forum to bring parents together and highlight the dangers of illicit substances, according to the Midland Reporter-Telegram. Alvarez told the news source that many adults refuse to believe that their children are using drugs. The stereotypical abuser never seems to fit the profile of their kid, but Alvarez stresses that drug users have many appearances. Children who participate in sports and achieve good grades are never accused of abusing illicit substances, but Alvarez told the news source that these kids may be just as guilty as their less popular peers. The Midland Police Department said that there has been a rise in drug use among high school students, specifically in regards to prescription medication. More than 20 million Americans admitted to using illicit substances within a 30-day period in 2006, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Family Services. Drug rehab programs can help individuals who are suffering from addiction.
