The Autism Society calls for increased awareness during April

By Staff Writer

In recognition of National Autism Awareness Month, The Autism Society recently announced that group members will initiate several new awareness programs throughout April.

Organization officials urge Americans to wear the Autism Awareness Puzzle Ribbon in support of their family members or friends who have an autism spectrum disorder, or to initiate conversations about the condition.

The society said that it has collaborated with AMC Theaters to provide the families of autistic individuals with an opportunity to attend showings of the new movie Hop, without the pressures of a general-public setting. The sensory-friendly films will allow viewers to move around the theater as they please.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in every 110 children suffers from an autism spectrum disorder. When compared to females, five times as many boys have the condition.

The CDC noted that although most autistic children are not officially diagnosed until they are 5 years old, 80 percent of parents identify developmental setbacks by the time their toddlers are 2.

Many school systems are unable to provide autistic children with adequate educational resources for academic and personal growth. Parents of kids with learning disabilities may consider enrolling them in boarding schools that specialize in helping youth with similar disorders.
