Therapeutic schools assist youths who suffer from anxiety issues

By Staff Writer

While scientists knew that several types of gastrointestinal diseases, such as irritable bowel syndrome, can cause anxiety and depression, researchers at McMaster University recently found evidence that disturbances in normal bacteria in the gut can influence brain chemistry and behavior.

University researchers found that by disrupting normal levels of the bacteria found in the gut of healthy mice, they could change their behavior. Specifically, researchers saw that these mice had an increase in brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which has a connection to anxiety and depression.

Individuals who have anxiety-related problems, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), can develop the condition during childhood, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. The most common sign of GAD is consistent worry or tension. However, people who have the disorder also have problems concentrating, fatigue, difficulty falling asleep and irritability.

Parents who believe their children's anxiety is holding them back academically may want to consider therapeutic schools. The staff members at many of these institutions are qualified to help youths deal with similar problems while assisting them in their education.
