Therapeutic schools can assist youths who have Asperger's

By Staff Writer

Asperger's syndrome is a developmental issue that falls under the broader category of autism spectrum disorders, according to the Nemours Foundation. Youths who have this disorder may display symptoms such as poor social skills, obsessions, abnormal speech patterns and few facial expressions. They may also react differently to sensory stimuli, such as light and sound.

Further research by the Interactive Autism Network shows that youths who have autism spectrum disorders may be prone to wandering and therefore require a high level of care.

Police in Sioux City, Iowa are currently looking for a missing 12-year-old boy who has Asperger's, KTIV reports. Christopher Serrano was last seen near his school and has now been gone for over 24 hours.

Locals are advised to look for a Hispanic boy wearing a red sweatshirt and carrying a backpack. Due to his disorder, authorities said that Serrano may be afraid to be approached, as he has trouble dealing with social situations.

Parents who do not feel that they can properly manage their children who have Asperger's may want to research therapeutic schools. Staff members at many of these facilities have been trained to assist teens who have similar disorders and disabilities.
