Therapeutic schools can be beneficial to children with Asperger's or autism
By Staff Writer
While the latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, a reference book of mental illnesses, lists Asperger's syndrome as being a separate disorder, a proposal for the 2013 edition suggests grouping Asperger's under the broader category of autism, according to the American Psychiatric Association. A recent article in the Los Angeles Times states that many researchers, like those who are composing the manual, now believe that it is impossible to draw a line between what is autism and what is Asperger's syndrome as the two share many common symptoms. However, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke reports that while they classify Asperger's as an autism spectrum disorder, it is very different from autism in that children with Asperger's are able to retain their early language skills and do not have delays in language development. If parents are struggling to manage a child who has Asperger's or autism, they may want to research therapeutic boarding schools. According to Help Starts Here, these institutions are an appropriate options for teens who are struggling with mental health issues or behavioral problems.
