Therapeutic schools can help manage the behavior of autistic youths
By Staff Writer
If parents believe they need additional support to manage their autistic youth, they may want to research a therapeutic boarding school. Many of these programs have a staff that is trained to work with these teens and can help prevent them from behaving in dangerous ways. Reginald Latson, an autistic teenager in Virginia, is facing over 10 years in prison for reportedly assaulting a school resource officer, according to the Stafford County Sun. Last year, the youth was approached by deputy Thomas Calverly for loitering in front of a local library. When the officer arrived, Latson reportedly became defensive, causing the officer to use pepper spray. The teen grabbed Calverly's bottle and sprayed him in return, the news outlet reports. After a lengthy struggle between the two individuals, Calvery reportedly had cuts, bruises, a head wound and a broken ankle. Latson's arrest recently gained national exposure when it was mentioned on The Talk television show during a segment on autism, the media outlet reports. According to the U.S. Library of Medicine, there are many possible symptoms of autism. Like Latson, some autistic youths may act out and become overly active or passionate. Autistic teenagers can also show aggression towards others.
