Tobacco Awareness Week spurs interest in drug-free education

By Staff Writer

The availability of cigarettes continues to fuel the amount of children who become addicted to nicotine. However, two communities are doing their part to raise awareness of the dangers of smoking to decrease the number of kids who use the drugs.

Cresco and Howard County in Iowa recently celebrated Tobacco Awareness Week in November to educate residents on the negative health effects that come with smoking, according to the Cresco Times.
Marilyn Zweibahmer, the Tobacco-Free Coalition Coordinator for Helping Services of Northeast Iowa, organized the event in light of the Great American Smoke-out. The goal of Zweibahmer and other volunteers across the country was to encourage kids to remain drug-free and persuade smokers to quit.

Following the success of Tobacco Awareness Week, organizers are now brainstorming other ways to keep the public educated on the dangers of cigarettes. Zweibahmer told the news source that advocates are currently working to pass tobacco-free legislation that would ban the substance from school grounds.

Parents and school administrators who enforce tobacco-free regulations may effectively persuade children to steer clear of drug abuse over time, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
