Troubled teenagers programs can help teens who use mushrooms

By Staff Writer

A teenager from New York was recently arrested when police noticed that he was selling hallucinogenic mushrooms and marijuana on a college campus, WHEC reports. The youth is being charged with criminal sale and possession of a controlled substance as well as criminal sale and possession of marijuana.

Police said that they seized 1 ounce of marijuana, his car and over $800 in cash.

According to the University of Washington, while some mushrooms are completely harmless, other contain hallucinogenic compounds that produce an alternate or false sense of sight, sound, taste, smell or touch. Mushrooms that create these effects include psilocybin/psilocin and amanita muscaria.

Teens who eat psilocybin/psilocin mushrooms will display symptoms such as yawning, inability to concentrate, increased heart rate, restlessness and hallucinations. This typically lasts for about four hours after the drug is eaten. Amanita muscaria will make teens prone to euphoria, hallucinations, muscle jerks, pupil dilation and sweating, according to the university.

Parents who believe that their teens are abusing mushrooms may want to consider enrolling their children in a troubled youth boarding school.
