Young girl seeks plastic surgery to avoid bullying at school

By Staff Writer

Samantha Shaw, a 7-year-old South Dakota resident, recently underwent cosmetic surgery to pin back her protruding ears, according to a recent article published by ABC News. The girl's mother told the news source that the procedure was a preventive measure that she said her family hopes will help the elementary school student avoid bullying and taunting from her peers.

"I don't want her to be teased and bullied and then have her lash out and treat people the way she's being treated," Samantha's mother, Cami Roselles, told the network.

The news provider cited data from American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, which indicates that there has been a 30 percent increase in the number of children undergoing cosmetic surgery over the past 10 years.

A recent survey conducted by i-SAFE Inc. revealed that many kids experience bullying, especially through online messaging or social networking sites. According to the poll's results, 42 percent of kids from fourth to eighth grade have endured cyber bullying.

Kids who are bullied over long periods of time may become depressed. Therapeutic boarding schools offer safe environments for children to learn and form healthy relationships with their peers.
