Younger boys are more likely to vomit to loose weight, study suggests

By Staff Writer

While some adults believe that bulimia, or throwing up to lose weight, is only an issue with older teens, a new study shows that this might be an incorrect assumption. Researchers working for the Taiwan Ministry of Education found that out of almost 16,000 children at multiple schools, about 10 percent of girls and 16 percent of boys force themselves to vomit.

Additionally, these figures were much higher in younger children, according to the researchers.

The study's results indicate that about 16 percent of 10- to 12-year-olds throw up to loose weight, while 15 percent of 13- to 15-year-olds do the same. For 16- to 18-year-olds, this number further decreases to 8 percent.

Researchers recommend that parents encourage their children to eat healthy diets, live more active lifestyles and get enough sleep in order to prevent self-induced vomiting. The study indicated that children who did not do these things were more likely to develop eating disorders.
However, adults who believe that their teens are already struggling with weight issues may want to get them treatment by enrolling them in schools for troubled youths.
