Youths believe positive effects of drinking outweigh the negatives

By Staff Writer

In a recent study, researchers from the University of Washington found that many individuals continue to drink because they feel that the perceived positive effects are greater than the known negative results, like poor decision making and hangovers.

The team of researchers asked about 500 college students to complete an online survey regarding their drinking habits over the past year as well as the consequences from their actions, such as hangovers, fights, missed classes and blackouts. The survey also asked these participants about the positive results of drinking, such as better conversational skills and having more energy to party.

Participants said that the good effects from drinking were likely to get better and are likely to happen again with more alcohol use. However, teens who had experienced the negative results of drinking did not think that these effects were likely to affect them again with additional alcohol use.

Parents who are concerned that their teens do not understand the negative consequences of their drinking habits may want to consider enrolling them in therapeutic schools.
