An independent study conducted by the University of Idaho's Wilderness Research Center found that participation in outdoor behavioral healthcare resulted in clinically significant reductions in the severity of behavioral and emotional symptoms. The study was designed to measure treatment effectiveness of outdoor behavioral healthcare using the Youth Outcome Questionnaire (Y-OQ), an industry-accepted outcome instrument designed to measure symptom reduction in psychotherapy.
The unique SUWS location/environment, with its high level of structure, small group sizes, "cause and effect" curriculum, and relationship/positive reinforcement approach makes for an ideal setting to begin building healthier coping behaviors and interpersonal skills. Our model affords much-needed structure and consistency regarding the treatment team, peer group dynamics, and provides a sense of completion.
We have so few meaningful rituals or ceremonies to mark important transition times. Wilderness programs are a powerful rite of passage, in which the individual is called on to shift from dependency to recognizing and relating from a place of interdependence.
Improved self-esteem comes naturally from meeting the challenges that are inherent in living outdoors, mastering the camping skills necessary to care for oneself and others in the group.

Teens develop a sense of belonging to the world, finding one’s place in nature, feeling a part of nature. They see themselves as part of a larger world rather than the center of their own universe. This gives teens a stronger sense of belonging with the family of humans, experiencing authentic, intimate relationships that meet on the grounds of shared pain, and the journey of recovery.
Self-limiting beliefs are challenged by the guided accomplishments of mastering the physical and relational skills of living outdoors with a small group of fellow journeyers.
Both parents and professionals can find exceptional programs for troubled children, teenagers, and young adults at Aspen Education Group. |
SUWS measures its success in many ways, from the smiles on the faces of the young people who now understand their worth to the willingness of parents to share their SUWS experience with other families in crisis.

We know that human beings need and want to contribute to a larger cause. At SUWS the search and rescue metaphor is the vehicle by which this is accomplished. From learning primitive-living skills to basic orienteering and first-aid techniques, students are personally challenged. In the midst of giving themselves, they find themselves.
